Our group’s members have always found the World War 2 era interesting, however did not know much more than the
American and German roles in the war. When we discovered that some Frenchmen began a successful resistance against the
invading Nazis, we were both captivated and desired to learn more. In addition to this, within our group there is someone
with French heritage who felt compelled to learn more about French history.
To conduct our research, my group used multiple techniques and sources. We first sent to our local library and spent a
few hours looking for any books having to do with the Nazi occupation of France, Charles de Gaulle, or the Free French
Forces. After we had picked all of the books, we looked in more depth at each book in order to pick out the books with the
most important and relevant information. We then logged onto multiple databases that we found via the LibGuides on La
Salle’s library website and found multiple useable and reliable sources. Then we gathered all sources we wanted to use, and
began to read through them finding relevant facts or meaningful quotes. As we found each fact or quote, we would write it
down on a notecard along with who wrote it and where we got it from. This helped us type the website, because we just had to
take each notecard, place them in the desired order, and then type them with their in-text citations.
My group decided to do our National History Day project in the form of a website based on the fact that we both had
previous knowledge on how to use a computer to design things. In addition the members of our group all thought it would be
the most efficient way for us to work considering the fact that we live far away from each other and meeting face to face to do
a board or record a documentary would be difficult. We created our website using Weebly.com, a web-hosting service with an
easy website builder, which was extremely helpful in creating our project. We used this service to “drag and drop” our
information and pictures from our word document into the website. We also used this to help with navigation tools, helping
to explore the site, including the buttons found in the footer of each page allowing for easy access throughout the site.
Our project related to the History Day theme of Leadership and Legacy for multiple reasons. The legacy of Charles de
Gaulle is so large and important in the history of the world, that modern day borders might have been a little different if not
for him and his work. Not only did he help keep France an independent nation, but he also helped lead it in the right
direction after he had liberated it from Nazi rule. He was so important to the survival and existence of France, that there are
multiple monuments and even an airport built in his honor.
