LEGACY OF CHARLES DE GAULLE
A ceremony commemorating Gen. Charles de Gaulle’s appeal for French resistance was held on June 16,
1946 by approximately 100 people at the New School for Social Research (New York Times 1946). De Gaulle
retired in Colombey where he worked on finishing his war memoirs. He finished them just before dying
November 9th 1970. At his request there was no public ceremony to honor what he had done for France
(Bigelow 5).
